  • Irene Siegel's "A Report from Nablus -- Sunday, September 22, 2002"
  • Irene is a doctoral student at U. C. Berkeley in Comparative Literature, focusing primarily on Arabic and French literature and cultures of the Middle East and North Africa. She spent three years living and studying in the Arab world, including a year and a half in Egypt and the Palestinian Territories, as well as Syria and Jordan. In Israel/Palestine Irene primarily worked with the International Solidarity Movement (a Palestinian-lead coalition of international and Palestinian non-violent peace activists), the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees (a Palestinian humanitarian aid N.G.O.), and Al-Haq (the oldest human rights organization in the Arab world). She also worked with activists from the Israeli and Israeli-Palestinian peace movements -- including Ta'ayush, Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, Rabbis for Human Rights, Gush Shalom, Alternative Information Center, Women in Black and Bat Shalom. She also worked with groups in Egypt and the Bay area on issues of Middle East peace and Palestinian rights, including Jews for Justice, Jews for Divestment from Israel, and The Arab-American Anti-Defamation Committee. Irene has been involved in social justice activism for over 20 years, and has spoken on panels and peace conferences across the U.S. and Egypt on non-violent civil disobedience and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

  • Special report on peace process from Institute for War and Peace Reporting

  • "With violence flaring in the Middle East daily, news coverage is dominated by a pervading sense of despair. IWPR presents special comment and analysis from  those involved in the conflict. Israelis and Palestinians share their fears and  frustrations over the shattered peace process - as well as their underlying faith  that common ground could still be found." http://www.iwpr.net/index.pl?special_mid_east.html

Site recommendations from Irene Siegel:
  • The Palestine Monitor is one of the best sources of information -- including useful fact sheets, articles and statistics.  It also has a great email list

  • which sends out weekly reports on the situation. http://www.palestinemonitor.org/
  • Another important source is the Palestinian Red Crescent's website, which is important for accurate stats on Palestinian casualties, as well as information on the targeting of medical personnel by the Israeli Occupatin Forces (IOF). http://www.palestinercs.org/
  • The page of the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees  also has some useful information and data on casualties

  • -- both due to IOF attacks and denial of access to medical care. http://www.upmrc.org
  • Miftah, the website of Hanan Ashrawi's group, is also a fine source of information. http://www.miftah.org/
