ORIAS Working Groups are established by the Office of Resources for International and Area Studies at U. C. Berkeley to provide professional development support for K-14 teachers with shared interests in international studies. The goal of the Working Group is to allow teachers to recharge their "batteries" through scholarship and discussion and to assist in creating accurate, flexible classroom materials. The working groups attend an on-going seminar program with University scholars for content support; meet with colleagues to share resources and experiences; and work independently or collaboratively on classroom materials with ORIAS staff.

The Working Groups are limited to 20 teachers. There is no charge for participating teachers. Readers and resource materials will be provided. A limited number of $100 stipends for curriculum development are available for this series. Public school teachers will be encouraged to bring a letter from their principal confirming their employment in order to receive a UCB library card. This series is funded by the Al-Falah Program.

Teachers participating in 30-hours of working group and/or outreach institutes hosted by ORIAS centers during the 2002-3 school year will be eligible for 2 graduate credits in the spring semester through University Extension for a reduced fee. Some scholarships may be available.
