ORIAS/BAGEP 2008 Working Group
Schools of Thought
The idea of social "enlightenment" has taken many forms in
human history. The ORIAS working group for this year will take advantage
of the 2007-2008 Humanities West lecture and performance program to explore
contrasting examples of social vision and philosophy through the eyes
of men and women who imagined new societies. We begin with the French
Enlightenment and its philosopher Voltaire (as well as his mistress, the
scientist and philosopher Emilie du Châtelet). From there we make
the surprising leap back in time to a nomadic vision of social enlightenment
in the Legacy of Genghis Khan - considering the Mongol's philosophy revealed
in music, art, religious tolerence, commerce and politics that go along
with the "Universal Ruler's" reputation for brutal warfare.
We will end the series with a look at 5th Century BCE Athens in the time
of Pericles, who despite political turmoil at home and constant threats
of invasion, imagined a democratic society valuing education and the arts.
An excellent way to end the school year!

ORIAS Working
Groups are established to provide professional development support
for K-11 and community college teachers with shared interests in international
studies. The working groups provide teachers with the opportunity to
extend their content knowledge by participating in seminars with University
scholars; meeting with colleagues to share resources and experiences;
and working independently or collaboratively on classroom materials
with ORIAS staff.
Co-sponsored by the Office of Resources for
International and Area Studies (ORIAS),
the Institute of European Studies at U. C. Berkeley, Humanities West,
and the Bay Area Global Education Program at the World Affairs Council
of Northern California.
