The Institute of European Studies at UC Berkeley invites educators to attend our one-day symposium entitled “Modern Sport and the Formation of European Identities”, on Saturday, April 5th, 2008.  The conference explores the peculiarities of modern European sports cultures ranging from team sports with global appeal (soccer, rugby, and cricket) to local and national sporting events (such as bull fighting and the Scottish Highland Games), and their social impact throughout the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Presentations will explore themes including but not limited to the modern Olympic movement, European sport and imperial culture, and the role of local/community sports in national identity formation.

Attendance is free.

We would be delighted to meet teachers at this conference and hope that a Saturday date will make attendance easier for you. We also plan on adapting conference proceedings into online curricular resource materials, and would be grateful to have your input on this project. To this end we are inviting teachers who attend the conference to lunch with us on the 5th, and at that time hope you will give us input on the most helpful ways to adapt the talks into materials that both educators and students can use.

We will send more information out, including a conference program, contact information, and driving directions as the conference date nears. So that we can plan refreshments, seating, and lunch, we would appreciate it if you would let us know as soon as possible whether you plan on coming.
