History Through Literature: Early Story Collections

ORIAS WORKING GROUP 2009

The History Through Literature Working Group is an opportunity for educators to explore world literature that supports the World History curriculum. This year we will look at two story collections that have been traded and transformed along trade routes from medieval through modern times. In addition to enjoying the tales as literature, we will consider them as primary sources for social history in their original context and in their process of translation across cultural borders.

Saturday, December 6, 10AM - 1PM
The first session will be devoted to the Arabic collection of tales, 1001 Nights. Prof. Margaret Larkin (Near Eastern Studies, UCB) will be our guide on an exploration of the stories framed within the Persian tale of Princess Sheherazade.

Saturday, January 10, 10AM-1PM
Our second session will explore the globe-trotting Jataka - morality tales of the Buddha’s previous lives. The guest speakers for this session will be Padmanabh S. Jaini, Prof emeritus, Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies, UCB and Dave Maier, Berkeley Rep School of Theatre.

Working Groups are open to all K-12 and community college educators and librarians.

Registration required. Registration for the first 12 educators is free of charge (others $25 per session). Program includes materials and lunch.

ORIAS Working Groups are established to provide professional development support for K-11 and community college teachers with shared interests in international studies. The working groups provide teachers with the opportunity to extend their content knowledge by participating in seminars with University scholars; meeting with colleagues to share resources and experiences; and working independently or collaboratively on classroom materials with ORIAS staff.

Co-sponsored by the Office of Resources for International and Area Studies (ORIAS), the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, and the Center for South Asia Studies at U. C. Berkeley, and the Institute of East Asian Studies.
