After centuries of devastating wars, in 1958 Western Europe launched an unprecedented experiment in peaceful cooperation. Under the motto “United in Diversity,” the result was ultimately known as the European Union (EU). Case studies of this evolving federation support the teaching of post-nationalism, migration, definitions of democracy, international law, human rights and national identities in the wake of the Cold War.
