The Karin-maru, Japan's first steam-driven warship, visited San Francisco in 1860 to initiate diplomatic ties to the United States following Matthew Perry's Opening of Japan in 1854. The story of the ship's arrival in San Francisco provides a rich local prompt for teaching about the Pacific Rim in 19th century world history. Details on this teachers' workshop to be announced.
Migration and Labor in the EU: a roadmap for the future? - Saturday, March 6, 2010.
Second annual one-day teachers' EU institute.
Migration, the movement of people across and between nations, is a central thread in history/social science curricula in California. The second annual EU teachers’ institute invites educators to explore the European Union as a case study of how contemporary political arrangements have fundamentally changed migration and labor processes.
Details of this workshop to be announced.

"Beijing Beat - Reports from Beijing and the Bay Area" • Digital TV and the World
Digital TV and the World is an initiative at the UCB Graduate School of Journalism to create new styles of global reportage that take a close-up look at ordinary people and the issues they face. Students in the program begin by telling the stories of people who live in diaspora communities in California, then examine the fabric of life in communities overseas by traveling abroad on intensive reporting assignments.
This year’s project focuses on stories of hustle, stress and solace on the streets of Beijing and beyond. You can see the video reports posted at washingtonpost.com.
