Teaching About Southeast Asia

During the Summer 2001 three educators spent six weeks as visiting scholars at ORIAS researching materials on Southeast Asia.  Their goal was to develop web-based materials appropriate for K-12 curriculum in California. The project was funded by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at U. C. Berkeley. The experience was a rewarding one both for the visiting scholars and the University staff. We hope to fund further such projects in the future. The teacher/scholars and their projects were:

• Peter Whittlesey (former Library Media Coordinator and currently part-time resident of Laos): A web reference of annotated sites for teaching about Southeast Asia

• Kay Corcoran (6th grade teacher at Del Mar School in Tiburon, California). Monsoon Winds to the "Land of Gold": Maritime Spice Trade from Southeast Asia to Rome.

 
• Donna Kasprowicz (6th grade teacher at Corte Madera Middle School, Portola Valley, California). The Ramayana in Southeast Asia.
