What can you expect each day of the program?
Our goal is that participants leave this program confident of their ability to bring this information into their classrooms and able to share their knowledge with colleagues. To that end, we've planned a week that incorporates a mix of independent learning, presentations, and very interactive learning by participants.
The program will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day, with an hour for lunch and short breaks at mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Participants will need to arrive each morning having completed the pre-reading for the day so they are prepared to fully engage with presenters and their colleagues, and so they can complete project work.
Each day will include presentations by scholars, an art analysis session, and at least one facilitated discussion period during which participants will be asked to synthesize their learning from readings and presentations. At the end of each day, participants will heavily annotate images for the day as they work to build a portfolio of teaching materials.
Reading and Preparation
Participants will be expected to complete preparatory work prior to each day of the seminar. Reading will be limited to approximately 50 pages per night and will include a selection of articles, pages from two texts, plus video and podcast selections.
The books are:
-
Indian Art (Oxford History of Art)(link is external) by Partha Mitter
-
India: Brief History of a Civilization(link is external) by Thomas Trautmann
The daily preparatory assignments are all outlined on the Readings and Resources page.
Participant Project
Each participant will work to produce a heavily annotated portfolio of images, using art pieces featured each day of the program. This process will require close reading, selection and explication of relevant passages from written texts, analysis of visual images, synthesis of information from lectures, and discussion with fellow participants.
Worktime is allocated for this project at the end of each day. Because of the collaborative nature of the work, participants will be expected to remain with the group as they complete this work.
